Trump Administration Letters to Countries Threaten Tariffs If Trade Deals Not Reached by August 1, 2025
The below information has been provided in-part to RIM by the NCBFAA and the Counsel of Sandler, Travis, & Rosenberg P.A.
On Monday, July 7th, President Trump authorized letters to be sent to numerous countries, stating that if suitable trade agreements are not reached by August 1st, they will be subject to additional tariffs.
The White House letters follow President Trump’s Executive Order issued on April 2nd, which stated that articles imported into the US from numerous countries would be subject to an additional tariff. However, on April 9th, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on the tariffs, pushing the effective date to July 9th.
“President Trump’s going to be sending letters to some of our trading partners saying that if they don’t move things along, then on August 1st they will boomerang back to their April 2nd tariff levels,” Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent told CNN on Sunday, July 6th.
As examples, President Trump posted on Truth Social his letters to Japan and South Korea, which indicate that the administration will impose 25% tariffs on imports from these two (2) countries by August 1st.
Key Points:
- The August 1st date is presented as an implementation date for tariffs for countries that have not reached new trade deals with the US.
- While the administration initially set July 9th as the date for tariffs to jump if no deals were made, they have now indicated that August 1st, 2025 as the date the tariffs will jump to the full April 2nd levels for countries without a finalized agreement.
- Letters detailing specific tariff rates were expected to be sent to trading partners starting July 7th, 2025.
- The White House confirmed the August 1st deadline on July 7th, 2025.
- Some officials have suggested that the deadline could be extended for countries that are actively seeking deals. However, the administration has generally described August 1st as the “implementation date” and not a new negotiation deadline.
