Super Typhoon Ragasa Projected to Impact South China
Super Typhoon Ragasa is scheduled to make landfall in Hong Kong late Tuesday, September 23rd and in Guangdong Province on Wednesday, September 24th. The storm is projected to be very strong, with sustained winds reaching 230 km/h (137 mph).
Air and ocean shipping across the South China region will be disrupted this week. The ports of Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou all closed on Monday in preparation for the storm. Yantian, the largest port in the region, confirmed it suspended operations at midnight. Rail operations and inland terminals are also expected to close. Resumption is currently estimated for September 25th – 26th , though this may change.
Hong Kong International Airport is expected to remain open throughout the storm; however, several airlines have suspended service. Cathay Pacific announced a 36-hour suspension of all inbound and outbound flights from 6:00PM Tuesday through 6:00AM Thursday.
Both ocean and airfreight from the region should expect significant delays. Please also note that China’s Golden Week holiday begins October 1st.
During the storm, the RIM Hong Kong team will remain operational remotely to continue supporting customers.
