Fuel Updates

Fuel is at $3.727 for the week, which is down from $3.775 the previous week.

Capacity has tightened across all modes as shippers look to get freight moved ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. The capacity crunch is not enough pressure for rates to go higher. Even though spot load posts are up 16%, we are still seeing overall truckload demand lag due to the trade uncertainty.

Reefer Freight:

  • The current national spot average is $2.35 per mile.
  • The load-to-truck ratio is up 46% due to the upcoming holiday.
  • A pre-holiday pricing surge is not likely to happen since we haven’t seen an increase in shipping like in previous years.

Van Freight:

  • The current national spot average is $2.02 per mile.
  • The Midwest makes up 45% of the load volume.
  • Capacity is tight in the North from Arizona to the Carolinas with five (5) loads to every truck.
  • The load-to-truck ratio is up 30% pre-holiday.

Flatbed Freight:

  • The current national spot average is $2.57 per mile.
  • The load-to-truck ratio is up 6%.
  • We have seen an increase in demand for machinery; however, other sectors are seeing softer demand.
  • Spot rates are expected to see a seasonal decline from now until the end of August.
