Canadian West Coast Labor Action Update – July 5th, 2023

More than 7,000 port workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in Canada have remained off the job since Saturday, keeping the ports of Vancouver and British Columbia closed for the forth day. As of now, The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and The Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada continue to negotiate and are apparently deadlocked over maintenance issues, according to both negotiating parties. The ILWU in Canada has been working without a contract since the expiration of the previous agreement on March 31st, 2023.

Unless a resolution or government intervention is successful, workers will continue to strike at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. These strikes are delaying cargo routed via these ports,  which are critical routes for cargo destined or originating within the interior US and Canada. No immediate resolution is on the negotiating table at this time.

RIM logistics, ltd. will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep you advised of any updates as they become known. Please contact your RIM representative should you have any questions or need additional information.
