West Coast Labor Update – June 15th, 2023
Late June 14th, the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced a tentative agreement on a new six-year contract covering workers at all 29 US West Coast Ports. The agreement prevents an immediate partial or full-widespread strike. The agreement is subject to ratification by both parties, and they will not be releasing details of the agreement at this time. The parties also recognized the efforts of the ILWU workforce in keeping ports operating since the contract expired in June of 2022. Should the agreement be ratified, ports will operate without interruption.
Additionally, there has been no further announcement by the ILWU in Canada following the tentative agreement made by the ILWU in the US. After the ILWU in Canada voted, overwhelmingly, on June 10th in support of a strike, both sides are reporting continued negotiations in order to avoid a lockout. If an agreement between the ILWU Canada and the PMA is not met by June 21st, a strike could occur at Canadian West Coast Ports as early June 24th. A strike would impact operations at Vancouver and Prince Rupert, both of which are critical routes for cargo destined or originating within the interior US and Canada.
