West Coast Labor Update – June 13th, 2023
Terminal disruptions continue sporadically in the Long Beach/Los Angeles port complexes and are expected to continue throughout the week. Additional port disruptions could occur at other US West Coast Ports, such as Seattle/Tacoma and Oakland, as labor actions may be carried out at random dates and times over the coming days while the PMA and ILWU continue to work on finalizing a contract agreement. Please be advised that we expect delays to occur and that both local and IPI cargo will continue to be impacted.
Additionally, the ILWU in Canada voted, overwhelmingly, on June 10th in support of a strike against local maritime employers, despite both sides reporting continued negotiations in order to avoid a strike. Port operations would be impacted at Prince Rupert and Vancouver in the event of a strike. Both sides are in a “cooling-off” period until June 21st, but laws require a 72-hour notice for a strike to commence. This means that the earliest a widespread strike could occur at Canadian West Coast Ports is June 24th.
RIM logistics, ltd. will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep you advised of any updates as they become known. Please contact your RIM representative should you have any questions or need additional information.
