US East and Gulf Coast Port Strike UPDATE
According to a joint statement from the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the US Maritime Alliance (USMX), the strike at ports along the US East and Gulf Coasts has been suspended following an agreement on wages.
“Effective immediately, all job-related actions will halt, and work under the Master Contract will resume,” both organizations announced on Thursday evening. The tentative agreement is reported to include a 62% wage increase for workers over the duration of the six-year contract.
Additionally, both parties have agreed to extend the current contract through January 15th, 2025. During this period, negotiations will continue to address other unresolved issues, including the union’s call for a prohibition on automation at the ports.
As the ports begin to reopen on Friday, delays should be expected as the backlog clears out.
