UPDATE: U.S. Imports from Mexico Covered by USMCA – 25% Tariff Postponed until April 2nd
President Trump posted on social media that after speaking with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum today, he agreed that Mexico would not be subject to the 25% tariffs if the U.S. imports already qualify under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“This Agreement is until April 2nd,” Trump posted @realDonaldTrump. “I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping illegal Aliens from entering the United States, and likewise, stopping Fentanyl.”
The 25% tariffs on Mexico, as well as on Canada, took effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on March 4.
On March 3, the day before the Mexico and Canada tariffs took effect, the Trump administration also offered the U.S. automotive industry a tariff exemption if they met the requirements of the USMCA.
At this time, certain U.S. steel and aluminum imports will be subject to a 25% tariff starting on March 12.
