President Trump Proposes 35% Tariff on Goods from Canada Starting August 1st
Late yesterday evening, July 10th, President Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that the US is prepared to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, effective August 1st at 12:01 AM EDT.
President Trump warned that transshipped goods would face even higher tariffs.
Highlighting fentanyl and “non-tariff barriers” from Canada, President Trump also noted the 400% tariff that Canada has imposed on US dairy products. “If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” President Trump wrote.
White House Warns 50% Tariff on US Imports of Brazilian Products Starting August 1st
In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on July 9th, President Trump said his administration would impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian products imported into the US, effective August 1st at 12:01 AM EDT.
The letter was made public by President Trump through a Truth Social post.
Among criticizing President Lula for the country’s investigations of former Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, President Trump said the proposed 50% tariff is “far less than what is needed to have the level playing field we must have with your country.”
The White House encouraged Brazil to work with US trade agreement negotiators to reach an agreement before the August 1st tariff deadline.
President Trump Announced 50% Tariff on Copper Starting August 1st
In a social media post the evening of July 9th, President Donald Trump wrote, “I am announcing a 50% tariff on copper, effective August 1st, 2025, after receiving a robust national security assessment.”
He said copper is necessary for semiconductors, aircraft, ships, ammunition, data centers, lithium-ion batteries, radar system, missile defense systems, and hypersonic weapons. “America will, once again, build a dominant copper industry.”
