Canadian West Coast Labor Action Update – July 10th, 2023

More than 7,000 port workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in Canada have remained off the job since July 1st, keeping the ports of Vancouver and British Columbia closed into the second week. As of now, The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and The Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in Canada took a break from discussions but returned to the table on July 9th with the support of federal mediators, as some of the 7,500 workers rallied at the port on Sunday. Both sides continue to negotiate and remain deadlocked over maintenance issues, according to both sides. The ILWU in Canada has been working without a contract since the expiration previous agreement on March 31st, 2023.

While resolution of a contract remains in a pending status, workers will continue to strike at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Carriers are currently assessing their route options around these ports, which is delaying cargo on these critical routes for cargo destined or originating within the interior US and Canada. No immediate resolution is on the negotiating table at this time.

RIM logistics, ltd. will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep you advised of any updates as they become known. Please contact your RIM representative should you have any questions or need additional information.
